Deze woning, tegenwoordig eigendom van Erna Winterdaal, werd gebouwd in 1922. Gilberto “Beto” Theysen werd geboren in 1894 en huwde met Anthonia Nogera. Samen kregen zij zeven kinderen. Opmerkelijk is dat de familienaam oorspronkelijk “Thijsen” was, maar door een administratieve fout in Venezuela veranderde de schrijfwijze later naar “Theysen”.

De woning werd opgetrokken uit grote natuurstenen, wat ervoor zorgde dat het huis stevig bleef en binnen aangenaam koel aanvoelde. In het verleden liep het terrein helemaal door tot aan de zee, waar zich vandaag de pier van het voormalige Brisas bevindt. De huidige weg doorsnijdt tegenwoordig het oorspronkelijke perceel van de familie.

Tijdens de bouw kwamen arbeiders vanuit Santa Cruz met ezels naar Savaneta, via de Franse Pas. De wegen waren destijds moeilijk begaanbaar en veranderden bij regenval vaak in modderige paden. Toch maakten de arbeiders deze tocht week na week om aan de woning te werken.

Beto Theysen leidde een veelzijdig bestaan. Hij beschikte over een eigen ranch, een kano om te vissen, een varkenskraal en een cunucu. Daarnaast werkte hij tot 1950 als politieagent en brandweerman bij Lago. Nadien was hij actief als timmerman en vervaardigde hij onder andere doodskisten.

Het levensverhaal van Gilberto “Beto” Theysen weerspiegelt de veerkracht, het harde werk en de sterke gemeenschapszin die kenmerkend waren voor het leven in Aruba in die periode.

This house, now owned by Erna Winterdaal, was built in 1922. Gilberto “Beto” Theysen was born in 1894 and married Anthonia Nogera. Together they had seven children. Interestingly, the family name was originally spelled “Thijsen,” but due to an administrative error in Venezuela, it was later changed to “Theysen.”

The house was constructed using large natural stones, which helped keep the structure solid and naturally cool inside. In the past, the property extended all the way to the sea, where the pier of the former Brisas is located today. The present-day road now cuts through what was once Beto’s original land.

During the construction of the house, workers traveled from Santa Cruz to Savaneta by donkey, passing through the Franse Pas. At the time, the roads were difficult to navigate and often turned muddy during periods of rain. Nevertheless, the workers made the journey week after week to continue the construction.

Beto Theysen led a hardworking and versatile life. He owned a ranch, a canoe for fishing, a pig pen, and a cunucu farm. In addition, he worked as a police officer and firefighter at Lago until 1950. Afterwards, he became a carpenter and was also known for building coffins.
