Huis van Ma Finchi

Ma Finchi, wiens echte naam Johanna Rosefina Schwengle was, werd geboren op 21 juli 1873. Zij woonde op Sero Alejandro 28, waar haar kleindochter vandaag de dag nog steeds woont. Ma Finchi was de eerste vroedvrouw voor het hele gebied van Savaneta, en heel veel baby’s zijn door haar handen gegaan. Vrijwel heel Savaneta heeft wel een verhaal over haar, omdat zij hielp nieuw leven op de wereld te brengen en veel moeders en baby’s heeft gered.

Dankzij Dr. Hopkins kreeg Ma Finchi haar opleiding. De dokter besefte dat het moeilijk was om op tijd in Savaneta te komen, soms duurde de reis wel drie uur, en daarom leidde hij Ma Finchi op tot vroedvrouw. Hij leerde haar ook hoe zij geneeskrachtige planten van het eiland kon gebruiken, gebaseerd op kennis die door de voorouders was doorgegeven.

Ma Finchi werd bekend om haar kruidengeneesmiddelen, en mensen uit heel Aruba, zelfs uit Noord, kwamen naar haar toe voor hulp. In die tijd was geld schaars, waardoor men vaak goederen ruilde als betaling.

Aan het einde van elk jaar kwamen veel kinderen naar haar huis om een zegen te ontvangen, en met groot respect knielden zij voor haar. Ma Finchi blijft in de herinnering van de gemeenschap voortleven als een vrouw met een groot hart en toewijding.

House of Ma Finchi

Ma Finchi, whose real name was Johanna Rosefina Schwengle, was born on July 21, 1873. She lived at Sero Alejandro 28, where her granddaughter still lives today. Ma Finchi was the first midwife for the entire Savaneta area, and many, many babies passed through her hands. Practically all of Savaneta has a story about her, as she helped bring life into the world and saved many mothers and babies.

Thanks to Dr. Hopkins, Ma Finchi received her training. The doctor realized it was difficult to reach Savaneta in time—sometimes the journey took up to three hours—and for that reason he trained Ma Finchi to become a midwife. He also taught her how to use local medicinal plants, based on the knowledge passed down by their ancestors.

Ma Finchi became well known for her herbal remedies, and people from all over Aruba, even from Noord, came to her for help. In those days, money was scarce, so people often traded goods as payment.

At the end of each year, many children would come to her house to receive a blessing, and with great respect they would kneel before her. Ma Finchi remains in the community’s memory as a woman with a big heart and deep dedication.
