Huis van  “Muis” / Sero Alejandro 33
Dit historische huis vertelt een bijzonder verhaal over het landelijke leven op Aruba in het begin van de twintigste eeuw.

De woning werd rond 1906 gebouwd voor Carlito De Cuba, een cunucero (landbouwer) die zijn landbouwgrond achter Sero Alejandro had liggen. Het oorspronkelijke huis was volledig uit natuursteen opgebouwd en was aanzienlijk kleiner dan het gebouw zoals we het vandaag kennen.

Naast het huis bevond zich een waterput die werd gebruikt voor drinkwater, koken en wassen. Deze put werd later afgesloten nadat Aruba toegang kreeg tot water via de Landswatervoorzieningsdienst (LWV), tegenwoordig bekend als WEB N.V. De omliggende woningen behoorden voornamelijk tot familieleden die in hechte verbondenheid met elkaar leefden en samenwerkten in de cunucu.

Na verloop van tijd werd het huis verkocht aan Chaia Arends. In 1963 kwam het vervolgens in handen van Juan Emilio van de Linde, die er tot op vandaag woont. Juan Emilio staat in de buurt beter bekend als “Muis”, een bijnaam die hij al sinds zijn jeugd draagt. Zijn vader was tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog de eerste chef-kok van de Marinierskazerne en verzorgde de maaltijden voor de militairen die daar gestationeerd waren.

“Muis” zelf heeft doorheen zijn leven verschillende beroepen uitgeoefend. In 1970 trad hij in dienst bij DOW, waar hij werkzaam bleef tot aan zijn pensioen.

Hoewel het huis niet toegankelijk is voor bezoekers, blijft het een waardevol onderdeel van de geschiedenis van Sero Alejandro en vormt het een mooie locatie om een foto te maken tijdens de route.

This historic house offers a glimpse into Aruba’s rural life during the early twentieth century.

The house was built around 1906 for Carlito De Cuba, a cunucero (farmer) who owned agricultural land behind Sero Alejandro. Originally, the house was constructed entirely of stone and was considerably smaller than the structure we see today.

Next to the house there was a well that provided water for drinking, cooking, and washing. The well was later sealed after Aruba gained access to water through the Landswatervoorzieningsdienst (LWV), now known as WEB N.V. Most of the surrounding homes belonged to relatives who lived closely together as a community and worked collectively on the nearby farmland.

Over time, the property was sold to Chaia Arends. In 1963, it was purchased by Juan Emilio van de Linde, who still lives there today. Juan Emilio is better known in the neighborhood as “Muis,” a nickname he has carried since childhood. His father served as the first chef at the Marine Barracks during the Second World War, preparing meals for the military personnel stationed there.

“Muis” himself worked in various professions throughout his life. In 1970, he joined DOW, where he remained employed until his retirement.

Although the house is not open to visitors, it remains an important part of the history of Sero Alejandro and continues to be a beautiful landmark to admire and photograph along the route.
